Isn’t it amazing how someone else’s perception of who we are tends to shape us in terms of who we believe ourselves to be?

How do I look? Do you like it? Does it taste good? Some of the many questions to which we seek answers from others that can could easily be answered by us. 

I mean, you’re eating the food right? You know it tastes great. Yet we will still ask…

There’s a difference between humility and a lack of self confidence. I’ve often struggled with the mindset that if I think too much of myself then I may be developing pride (which incidentally is the sin that caused Satan to fall so that totally freaks me out), but thinking too little of myself is just as great of a problem, because it dishonours God. 

God is the great I Am. When asked by Moses, this was the name by which He introduced Himself. He is. He needs nothing further to complete the name because He is all in all. The Alpha and Omega (beginning and the end).

Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

Exodus 3:13-14

In calling ourselves Christians, we align ourselves with the name of God. Christ means “the anointed one” the term Christian being defined as “little anointed ones”.

This is powerful! Imagine walking around calling yourself a Christian, or rather, A “little anointed one”, and behaving as if we are powerless! 

When we start with the words “I Am” we need to be careful of the words we use to complete that thought. Because God is the great I Am, He doesn’t need a word to complete the sentence, but we do. Bearing in mind that we were created in His image, do the words we use to complete our sentences honour or dishonour our creator? Bear this in mind the next time you describe yourself.

Do you struggle to read the heading of this post and apply it to yourself? I ask you: Who told you that you are nothing? Who told you that you are unloved? Not good enough? Less than? Unworthy? Who makes you feel ashamed? I’ll tell you who, the one who has the most to gain from you feeling as if you are worthless…

His name is “satan” which means enemy / to oppose / adversary; also known as “devil” which means to slander / speak falsely with the intent of bringing harm / accuser of brethren; “belial” which is linked to worthlessness, he works on our self worth, to degrade and devalue, deforming our character; “tempter” inciting a moral battle leading us to sin; “liar” ; “deceiver”; “destroyer”; to name a few…

Take note of these names because its a reminder of who he is and what he does to us.

The way in which we protect ourselves from these lies and deceit is by knowing what God says about us, by knowing who we are in Christ…

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!

Psalm 139:13-17

But you are God’s chosen treasure —priests who are kings, a spiritual “nation” set apart as God’s devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience his marvelous light, and now He claims you as his very own. He did this so that you would broadcast his glorious wonders throughout the world.

You can be called a “Child of God” but wander from home. This doesn’t change your title, but when you change your position, you either accept the title or reject it. You can walk in the authority and purpose that God has for you or you can chose to listen to the voice of the enemy and live defeated!

If you are going to listen to someone’s opinion of who you are, let that voice be the voice of the One who created you. The One who loved you so much that He would die for you! I must be pretty awesome to be worth dying for…
